Protect San Marcos Water and Wildlife:
Our rivers and aquifer are sacred. Approving large Data Centers threatens them—and our community. These facilities use massive amounts of water, risking our aquifer, tourism, local wildlife, and the future of recreation in San Marcos. I will fight to keep our water, rivers, and natural spaces safe for everyone.
Affordable Housing and Homelessness
Affordable Housing:
Housing in San Marcos is skyrocketing. Longtime residents and Texas State students alike struggle to afford living in the place they call home. While the San Marcos Housing Authority provides options for some, many—especially students—fall through the cracks.
I support a coordinated approach: reforming zoning laws to allow higher-density and mixed-use developments, accessory dwelling units (ADUs), and smaller lot sizes. Incentives like tax abatements and fee waivers can encourage developers to include more affordable units. Using CDBG funds to preserve and rehabilitate existing homes will also help ensure everyone has a place to stay.
Homelessness:
Homelessness is more than just an affordable housing issue—it’s a human issue. Many in our community are struggling to find safety and stability. Organizations like the Southside Community Center, Hays-Caldwell Women’s Center, and Gary Job Corps work tirelessly to help, but they need more support. I believe the City must step up to provide additional resources and assistance to our most vulnerable neighbors.
Transportation
San Marcos’ bus system is vital for residents and students to get to work, class, groceries, or downtown. While CARTS (Capital Area Rural Transportation System) does a good job, riders often struggle to access real-time updates on arrivals and delays. Cities like Waco have transit apps that track rides live—San Marcos deserves the same. Reliable, real-time transit information will make CARTS more dependable for everyone.
The Solution
Good ideas require smart funding. By reexamining discretionary spending, adjusting long-term capital projects, and seeking federal grants, the City can prioritize initiatives like affordable housing, homelessness support, and improved transportation. Smart budgeting ensures our community’s needs come first—without raising unnecessary taxes. Let's put San Marcos first!
